Are you guys really really serious?

Fitxer:PlazaIndependencia2.jpg
Cuz I looked into the Uruguay thing and it's actually kinda doable. Though IF we do this it would have to be, like, next year or something.

We'd be staying somewhere off to the left of this picture. Hostel there with beds for $11/night. But hostel means dorm-type shared rooms. But it's crazy cheap and a sneeze away from everywhere. We'd be making our way through this infinite street fair held on Sundays. My thought was a 9 day stay to catch 2 street fairs.
In between we'd have workshops, visit the artisan market, go to old town for gems and more little old things, and go to the museum of modern art that is so inspiring you'll loose control over your bowels. You gotta work tho- there's everything under the sun at these places and you gotta focus on finding the tables of little things, snap them up and keep pace with the group. Lots of people speak English, or will attempt to.

Anyhow, my dad insists plane tickets are $1300 round trip (tho I had to pay $2000 so go figure.) You'd need to bring enough moola for room and food and treasures...
Everything there is tiny. Streets and cars and chairs. You'd have to be able to fit into these beds-->>

And bring ear plugs if we do it hostel style. In case someone snores.

And you can't be a vegetarian there I don't think. Or not a strict one.

What else?

You'd have to accept that doors are 2 stories tall for no apparent reason:(from)
And random building facades from the 70s:
Sparsely attended street riots:
Endless meat:

Bizarre modes of transportation:

Primary colors:

Suddenly finding yourself shrunk down to the size of a mouse:
Ah, flickr. You're so entertaining...
But seriously, how many of you would really go? Cuz I'd need a decent sized group -say 6 people- and most of you are starving artists. If this were to happen, show of hands, who could go?

(p.s.- Jackie, you cracked me up big time. )
(p.p.s.- I lowered prices about $5-$10 on almost everything in the shop, just in case there was something you were eyeing.)

I would be into it, winter is better than summer for me because it's a lot closer to Arizona than Alaska.
Can my husband come along as a protector and all around fun guy? he'll stay out of the way if need be. He'll be out looking for rocks and stuff and hiking to high places.

Marina, one more thing re: books, photos... something to consider would be self-publishing via print-on-demand (such as Lulu.com). Self publishing doesn't have the stigma it once did (it's more like the way people release music on their own now) and I think it would be far more profitable for you in the longrun, esp. for a how-to kind of book. If you want further info on how that works, email me. I've used Lulu very successfully for an architecture design clients. Gorgeous printed results. You still need high res images tho. :(

Ur tempts me! Can't a vegetarian live on cheese there for 10 days? And laxatives? (sorry!) Such is my life of travel at times... even Paris was a challenge.

Damn, sounds like fun. But I'm going to Hawaii for my 40th next year. Wish I could do both! :(

I dreamed of moving to Uruguay years ago. Being among the aforementioned 'starving artists' ....you torture me.

Yeah sure, just go ahead and have fun without me, I'll just stay here in my stupid country. Although to be honest it does look hot there and I hate that, and hostel-style sleeping arrangements puts me off - that's one step away from camping which is an abomination unto the Sparrow...mmm suckin up them sour grapes.

Wow looks very coo/fun -- I would love to go but would need a bit more info - dates? I would try try try my best to do it. Lori

Sparrow, I promise to come to your "stupid" country and visit you too if it makes you feel any better. We could do a mini workshop. My brother lives in the neighborhood over in Bali and we were talking about combing a trip someday.

Just as an example, a one-stop round trip by Copa Airlines, leaving Chicago on May 2 and returning from Montevideo on May 18, is listed at $1248 per person, including taxes and (Expedia) fees.
Negotiating with AliTravel or other SouthAm specialist agencies may get you a bit lower fares.
A direct flight from Miami will be even cheaper.

OK now you got me looking into it. I guessing you are thinking of Montevideo? So high flight but lower basic stuff - rooms- food? I am going to dig further -- I was looking at lonely planet website.
Excited....Lori

I'm heartbroken. This is just the sort of trip I dream of taking. Alas, I fall in that 'starving artist' category. I'll be toasting you all from afar.

I just recently started following your blog, and man, I must say you are tempting me! I am too among the "starving artist" tho and don't think I could even begin to afford to go. . . I hope you can pull this together tho, so I can travel vicariously through all of you!

I would do a trip like this.... but I could not stay in a hostel with the rest of you.... I have a spinal cord injury and must sleep on good mattresses. Luckily - there are luxury hotels in the area. If that would not offend anyone, that is...... I am 50, after all, and have to think of the comfort of my ass.

I saw some hotels for $30 a night. I'd like to stay in one of those due to my older body. Lori

Marina, I'm so glad you found my mis-step humorous, Penny did too! It wasn't your bday, it was her's! LOL Back when I jotted the date on that little scrap of paper I was still getting you guys mixed up, therefore HB to you instead of Penny. It's all in the family, so all is good. But I did feel like a dork!

Oh I wanna go to Uruguay with everyone so bad but unfortunately I'm one the starving artists. Of course if I hit the lottery or my jewelry sells VERY well, I'm in!! I wish you lucky ladies tons of fun. Hanging out with Fanci, I can't think of anything more fun.

Alas......I too am one of the afore mentioned starving artists who has to venture out into the outside world to eat. You all are so blessed. It would definitly be the trip of a lifetime. I will be with you all in spirit at the street fairs and artisan markets, fanci's classes and sightseeing. I can hardly wait to see the treasures you find and what you create.

I wanna do it!!!
Not a strict vegetarian (will consume a little seafood)
Would prefer a hotel room to hostel.
