In The Big Time Babeeeeee!

OK, as excited I am about the amazing reception of my very 1st tute, I think I may be equally excited about something else that just happened--- my first hate mail! I mean, that is how you know you've really arrived. MAybe you all wanna rush to assure me I'm great and this person is nuts, etc., not realizing how much I've been looking forward to this for ages. Like, I regularly think about this and how it happens to everyone whose audience reaches a critical mass and wondering why it hadn't happened to me yet. In fact, it's not even all that. Cuz it's not that hateful, mostly just grumpy. And confused. Lemme share...

wow...things change
i loved you for all the free tutes, not makin enough off the jewelry?
it is a shame that things change
I thought of you as a real giver and now you are real commercial. So sad. And 12 bux seems high, could buy a whole book for that.
boofrickinhoo

Did you catch that?!?! I'm commercial!!! Hahaha... oh wow is that surreal.
Now, do I need to answer this? No, of course not. (But I can't bite my tongue. OF COURSE I'm not making enough money selling handmade jewelry piece by piece over the internet! Duh. Who is? If I were, I might be able to buy the dwelling I live in, own a car and have a retirement plan. You know- join the middle class? Also, I did after all provide you with all the info you need to make the pins, if you'd take some time to figure it out, like I did. AND- almost all artists who make a living off being an artist do so by selling workshops, books, e-classes or tutorials. It's what we've worked at, so we want to make a living off of it so we can continue to do what we love. Duh.)
OK, that was all so stupidly obvious.... that I can't actually be upset at this person. In fact what's going through my mind is, "I liked the old fancifuldevices, before she sold out" like an early 90s hipster!
Aaaahhh.... does my heart good.

OK, reminder: one more day for the coupon code- artyminions -for a 25% off. You have to type it in the specific coupon code section or it doesn't work. Maybe we should start a special section on the forums to post pix of our results? or what we end up using the headpins for? I'd love to see what you make.

*giggle* oh good..I'm not the only one who gets gleeful over hate mail :D Well, the kind that you can see the lighter side of, anyhow :) I have a fiction website where I posted info my own versions of various creatures found in my writing. I had a chick write me a nasty note saying how my info on werewolves was all wrong... and she should know, cause she was one.. O.o That was two years ago and I STILL haven't stopped giggling over it. I saved it :) And it wasn't even her saying that she was one that gets me giggling because,hey.. look at the world we live in... who knows, right? No..I get all giggly over the fact that she wrote a pissy letter to a FICTION website in reply to a FICTIONAL information base that stated right on it that the info was created FOR that website and not based on anything else >.< And don't even get me started on comments from fangirls over my male characters and who they're with...I have GLEEFULLY plotted out entire story lines JUST to irritate the snot out of those girls and get hate mail from them LOL... that might be why I was never invited to their club while my writing partners were ;)

Keep up the good attitude over it :) Some people will be put out that a formerly free source has begun charging a fee. I love free stuff and I admit I'm a bit of a scrooge about paying out money if I don't have to. But hey.. if it's something I want to learn bad enough... ;)

Wow hate mail! So jealous.

As Katt Williams says: "If you have someone hating on you right now you better think of how to get five more people hating by Christmas."

The kitty pictures are hysterical.... xo!

Keeerisst...don't get me started!

Are any of you lovelies old enough to remember the old matchbook cover peddling Art school? 'Become an artist, earn $100 a week! Enough said...
( but psssst - just in case you didn't get it, that amount is pretty accurate....)

Tutorials are a lifesaver and I serve notice here and now that I intend to jump on the boat while still shooting out some free ones from time to time ('cause I'm not nearly as venal as those kitties you see here...ha!)

Anvilartifacts said...

I think you had it covered with " duh" but I so enjoyed the kitties comments that I'm glad you elaborated! :)

Green Studio said...

Fanci,
You are great with people when they have their "duh" moments. Me included ;') Since your feeling better again, I am like your Mom, "I crack, I crack.."

You should self-publish a book, call it WWFD....lots of tutorials. Just some thoughts...

So simpleminded, outright nasty and outrageous that it does not warrant a response, really, but anon has made responses so easy. It's like saying:
"I loved it when you were successful and commercial *enough* that I was able to view your shop and find your blog, wherein you provide many free tutorials, including actually, free basic directions to make the artisian head pins even, but now that I see you want compensation for your time, ideas, and hard work--and that dozens of people have actually paid you for it, I see this as a measure of your success. Instead of congratulating you, being kind, or simply just noting it, I will feign indignity over some misguided and unformed notion of commercialism/selling out, because that's the only thing I can think of to sting you with. Your continued and evolving success just isn't working for me anymore. Because this is all about me."

You should have a pdf tutorial on how to make your own one fingered salute with a yak bone. It's part of striving for success, you'll always get those who will try to knock you down, just drive on by.

well look at her name she's gonna gripe over a whole lot of stuff, not just yours. and folk who gripe over the way others do things have got their wires crossed. I mean, get a life - get on with your own stuff, you know? If you want to go and sell pdf tutorials, which is YOUR DECISION because, well, after all, it's YOUR shop, then you do it, right? Whoever is against it can go eat cake. (what does that mean anyway?) She's obviously idolised you - but don't worry, you got lots of fans left. ;) Your work is exquisite, so you keep on go getting them. :)

Just yesterday I was thrilled to have not one, but two spam comments on my blog for the very first time. I can't imagine the feeling of getting hate mail. I live for the day. But, alas, I am just starting out at the blogging thing so it may take a while. Hmmmm, wondering what controversial subject I can write about to stir things up....

Have a great weekend!

I thought everyone was entitled to their own opinion. It may differ from yours but does that make mine wrong, or yours, or neither?

I guess the honeymoon is over.

this is soo funny..per your mom.. I crack, I crack..and Beatenheart had me rollin' out of my chair..yep i'll be trolling the Hobby Lobby isles looking for your jewelry kits soon.
I've been supporting myself as an artist for decades..i work for $$$
since all my utilites, insurance and house payments want cold hard cash in their hands..who works for a bank, grocery, or plumber for free...no one...just sayin'

Sharon Driscoll said...

"Will work for $" Uh, when was that any different for any artist. Some teach - some write tutorials -LOL, and some marry very very well. History says very few make "it" on their art alone. Someone needs to get over their self and forget about labeling people for not being given everything for free.

You are so incredibly generous of spirit and have handled it very graciously. I even came out of the closet of non-commenting readers to say so. So there you go!

Mellisa said...

Awesome! You've arrived :)

Deryn Mentock said...

Why, oh why, did you sell your soul to the devil? ahahahah!

Believe me, you won't make enough money selling tutorials, one at a time, through etsy, either! Welcome to the world of capitalism where people actually try to make money to support themselves and their families. Dive in...the water's fine! ;)

xxoo

This is one funny old bidness!!! All these hidden rules of etiquette that are determined by individual opinions! Makes it very clear that the only thing you can possibly do is to walk your own walk, and have a permanent yak bone middle finger showing!! So, the deal is that you're supposed to work for nothing then, is it?? I seeeeeee.

Rosie Moceri said...

You' all are a hoot! You've sold your soul to the devil Fanci! :)
Don't you know that you're supposed to be creative, spend all your spare time creating, then start a blog, spend all your time trying to take perfect photos, fight with Photoshop, then make more jewelry, put it on Etsy, ship out packages, then pay the Etsy and Paypal fees and then pay taxes, minus materials, while doing this all on a coffee table (I use the floor) AND then share all your knowledge on your blog with people who have no flippin' idea how to have their own ideas....
How dare you charge $12 for a tute. Bugs.

Gypsy Fish said...

Well ladies....I have to say this was $12 worth spent! So now that I have burned out my retinas by reading the devils document....I think you should come over to the dark side and join the heathen and purchase one of these tutorials. Let's not forget about the content...so many sell less for more. After all....Fanci's been givin' it away for free...and as we all know nothing's free!
ok off my soapbox.

Oooh, now I can picture you hunched over a rickety table counting your piles of filthy lucre by candlelight.

I suspect your critic is mostly bitter because she's trying to save up for a shift key so she can make capital letters and can't afford the twelve bucks.

Just wait until you have a book deal, then you'll have amazon reviewers to contend with. 'Cause that always looks like some fun!

Suzyfrank said...

You are more than generous with your time and your skills. (you certainly have been with me). I have noticed there are a lot of crybabies running around on Etsy. Haters gonna hate. You frickin rock!

Tribalis said...

So sad hum..
I want see the day when our word, this animated force, be just an instrument that builds god things, god feelings.
Let's go work on this in ours lives.

Your tutorial looks like amazing!
Hugs Fanci.

Hahahaha! These comments are great. I've never really got hate mail. I had someone complain I was stealing their idea once, only to back peddle when i pointed out someone else doing the same thing a good year before them. One day maybe I'll have my own anon. Till then, I read boofrickenhoo's comments and all I see is 'HEY COW- I WANT MY MILK FOR FREE N IF U NO LIKE IT U R A SMALL MINDED CREATURE'
